Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team might be building a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve with a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in a variety of manners, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
